Michael Schumacher to join rivals

Ferrari has insisted they will not prevent Michael Schumacher making a Formula 1 return with another team. The seven-time world champion has been a consultant for Ferrari since retiring in 2006 and said recently he would stay in the role for another three years. But Ferrari chief Luca di Montezemolo says his position is not binding.

Schumacher, 40, has been linked with a move to Mercedes, who have taken over world champions Brawn and already signed driver Nico Rosberg for 2010. Schumacher was on the brink of a racing return with Ferrari in August to deputise for the injured Felipe Massa.

Those plans were abandoned following medical checks on a neck injury the German suffered in a motorcycle accident earlier this year. With that neck problem now understood to be fully healed, Schumacher is thought to be close to completing a sensational return to the sport with German giants Mercedes.

A rare surfing competition has been held in Hawaii as waves of 12m (40ft) pounded Oahu's famous North Shore. Thousands of people gathered on beaches and cliffs to watch the world's greatest surfers tackle the waves. It was only the eighth time in 25 years that the Eddie Aikau competition, named in honour of a celebrated Hawaiian surfer and lifeguard, was held.

The contest is only staged in the most extreme surf conditions and last took place in 2004. Nine-time world champion Kelly Slater was the strongest starter, but first-time entrant Greg Long, 24, took a narrow lead over his older rival and won with a score of 323 to 313.

Victoria bans Jump Racing

Steeplechase and hurdle racing in the Australian state of Victoria will be abolished in 2010, prompted by the deaths of 20 horses in two years. The decision follows a comprehensive review of the sport and has been welcomed by animal welfare groups. However, members of the racing industry have reacted with anger, calling it unbelievable and appalling. Racing's governing body in Victoria had conceded that the sport was in decline because of mounting safety concerns.

Animal rights campaigners have described racing over hurdles and fences as not only shameful and barbaric but morally wrong. An official review of the industry last year recommended a raft of new safety measures, all of which were adopted by authorities in Victoria. Despite the changes, the fatalities have continued, with eight horses dying in races this season. The deaths prompted an urgent investigation, which has resulted in the banning of the sport.

Is Mathematics hard to study? No says the researchers in the University of Mississippi, fantasy sports can help the students to score high marks in Mathematics. So a conclusion was made by Mr. Kim Beason, associate professor of park and recreation management and Mr. Dan Flockhart, a former California middle school teacher. Dan Flockhart has written many mathematics textbooks.

From this study it has been known that fantasy sports has increased maths scores and mainly in the areas ranging from algebraic formulas to fractions. Above 50% among middle school students has scored high marks in maths. Beason said this is huge improvement among the students and both boys and girls have scored well. In America over sixty-nine percent of the students who are doing their eighth-grade are not so proficient in maths. Flockhart believes the fantasy sports will play a key role in America and it will help to improve the math scores.
