New Moon tops record

Teen vampire sequel The Twilight Saga: New Moon drew in the crowds over a record-breaking holiday weekend to keep its grip on top of the US box office. The film, which stars British actor Robert Pattinson, took $42.5m (£25.7m). Coming close on its heels was real-life drama The Blind Side, which recounts the story of a homeless boy's rise to the top of his sport.

Total takings of $275m (£166.6m) broke a previous record set in 2000 for the five-day Thanksgiving period. Then, Dr Suess' How The Grinch Stole Christmas and M Night Shyamalan thriller Unbreakable were among the chart-toppers, and takings were $244.4m (£147.9m). Third in this week's chart was end-of-the-world blockbuster 2012, which raked in $18m (£10.8m).

Among the new releases for the weekend was family comedy Old Dogs, starring Robin Williams and John Travolta, which entered at number four. Thriller The Ninja Assassin, featuring Korean pop star Rain, was a new entry at number six, with $13.1m (£7.9m). New Moon, based on the best-selling books by Stephenie Meyer, has so far taken $230.7m (139.4m) in the 10 days since it opened, surpassing the entire takings of its predecessor, Twilight, by $40m (£24.1m)

Rape warning on christmas drinks

Posted by World

Women heading out for Christmas drinks have been warned by police not to make themselves easy prey for rapists. Senior officers in England and Wales warned of the risks as the Association of Chief Police Officers (Acpo) launched a campaign to raise awareness. Poster, radio and TV advertisements will urge women to let your hair down, not your guard, while warning men, Rape: short word, long sentence. Many forces record an increase in sex attacks over the festive period. It comes as thousands of people head to pubs, bars and clubs.

The Acpo campaign was launched in Manchester where it is thought that alcohol plays a part in two thirds of all rape cases. In the city there has been a rise in reported cases of rape over December and January in recent years. The police campaign aims to raise awareness of a number of steps women can take to protect themselves and tells men of the need to seek consent for sex.

Cheshire Chief Constable Dave Whatton, the national lead on tackling rape, said alcohol tended to be a factor in a large number of rapes. He said ultimately we want to prevent rape from occurring in the first place, by arming potential victims with key advice on how to keep them safe. But we are also aware of the sad reality that many victims of rape remain silent.

Galactic collison game

Posted by World

Astronomers have devised a game to help uncover the basis of galactic pile-ups. The game, part of the ongoing web-based project Galaxy Zoo, shows players images of colliding galaxies and asks them to match those to simulations. By selecting the closest matching simulation, players can help astronomers to work out how the real galaxies actually merged. The astronomers say that humans are much better than computers at spotting the patterns and similarities.

The developers described the game as a "cosmic fruit machine". It shows players one real galaxy image and, on command, eight randomly selected simulations pop into the "slots" surrounding that image. The aim is for players to choose the simulations that look most similar to the real galaxy and take those through to the next round to examine them further. The simulated images show the different aspects of galaxy formation, so as people play, they will generate data that will help astronomers' understanding of these collisions.

The strength of the game is that it takes results from many people, said Dr Chris Lintott from Oxford University, one of the members of the Galaxy Zoo team. These galactic mergers could be the key to why the Universe contains a mixture of different galaxies - some with trailing spiral arms, others more like compact balls of stars.

Victoria bans Jump Racing

Posted by World

Steeplechase and hurdle racing in the Australian state of Victoria will be abolished in 2010, prompted by the deaths of 20 horses in two years. The decision follows a comprehensive review of the sport and has been welcomed by animal welfare groups. However, members of the racing industry have reacted with anger, calling it unbelievable and appalling. Racing's governing body in Victoria had conceded that the sport was in decline because of mounting safety concerns.

Animal rights campaigners have described racing over hurdles and fences as not only shameful and barbaric but morally wrong. An official review of the industry last year recommended a raft of new safety measures, all of which were adopted by authorities in Victoria. Despite the changes, the fatalities have continued, with eight horses dying in races this season. The deaths prompted an urgent investigation, which has resulted in the banning of the sport.
